Download, install, connect

One archive, no installer, one account made on the login screen. About five minutes on a normal connection.

Requirements

The client is the original 2006 engine with two decades of fixes on top. It is undemanding by modern standards and runs comfortably on hardware that would struggle with anything current.

Operating systemWindows 10 or 11. The executable is 32-bit and runs on 64-bit Windows without a compatibility layer.
GraphicsAny GPU with Direct3D 9 support. That is effectively every GPU made since 2005.
DiskAround 600 MB once extracted, from a 325 MB archive.
NetworkOutbound TCP for the lobby and outbound UDP for in-match traffic. No port forwarding required.
Not supportedmacOS and Linux have no native client. Both work under Wine or Proton for most people, but neither is tested and neither is supported.

Download

One archive containing the whole client. There is no separate installer and nothing is written outside the folder you extract it to — no registry keys, no Program Files, no service.

WindowsNo installerNo launcher

The client is not downloadable yet

There is no build worth handing out right now, and putting a stale one in front of you would be a worse introduction than a closed door. It goes out through the Discord the day it is ready, and the announcement lands there and on this site at the same moment — there is no list to be on and nothing to chase.

Install

  1. Extract the archive. Put it somewhere you have write access — a folder on your desktop is fine. Avoid C:\Program Files; the game writes next to itself and Windows will block that.
  2. Run Gunz.exe. There is no launcher and no installer in the closed-beta archive. The server address is already set, so the first thing you see is the login screen. Windows will warn once that the executable is unsigned — "More info", then "Run anyway".
  3. Let Windows Defender finish. The first launch is slow while Defender scans an unfamiliar executable. It is not doing anything else.

Making an account

Accounts are created on the login screen, inside the client. There is no email confirmation, no forum registration and no separate website account, because none of those things make a fight fairer and all of them lose people at the door.

Your account is a name and a password. Use a password you do not use anywhere else — this is a hobbyist server, and you should treat every hobbyist server that way.

Troubleshooting

Where is the launcher, and how do I get updates?
There is no launcher during the closed beta. The archive is the whole client and you start Gunz.exe yourself. Updates are announced in the Discord as a new archive — the auto-patcher exists but is not switched on until the beta opens up.
The game starts and immediately closes
Almost always a missing Visual C++ runtime or a Direct3D 9 device that failed to create. Install the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables and the legacy DirectX 9 runtime, then try again. If it still closes, post the contents of the log file from the client folder in the Discord support channel.
I connect, but every match is unplayable
In-match traffic is UDP. Some corporate networks, some university networks and a small number of consumer routers drop it. Test on a phone hotspot: if the hotspot is fine and your home connection is not, the problem is between your router and the server, not in the client.
Can I use a controller?
No. K-Style depends on precise keyboard and mouse timing, and the input path has not been changed to accommodate anything else.
Will my old GunZ account or items transfer?
No. This is a separate server with its own database. Nothing carries over from any other server, official or private.

Still stuck? Ask in the Discord support channel. Include your Windows version, your GPU, and the log file from the client folder — without those, the answer is always going to be a question.
